Shot on Phoenix 200 medium format film, a newly developed colour stock from Harman. It’s flawed and unpredictable when compared to the ultra-refined Kodak stocks, but for mine the ‘flaws’ make it.
The idiosyncracies of Phoenix include extremely high contrast, harsh grain, and even colour shifts. Photographers are finding ways around these limitations, but my approach has been to lean into them.
This image was captured on a hot Australian summer day, under our notoriously harsh sunlight.
Pointing the stock toward its biggest weakness makes the margin for error pretty minimal. But when it works, it really works.

Shot on Portra 800 film at Calder Park with the Porsche Club of Victoria. Images like this require a certain amount of luck. They say you make your luck, but there’s a magic in these moments which needs to be acknowledged.
In this case the position of the car and sun perfectly highlights rocks stuck to the racing slick tires. The shadow from its mirror lines up perfectly with the top of the 70, and the spaces between the wheel spokes each display a hugely different quality of light. It’s the kind of photograph I could look at for hours;
I keep doing just that.

Shot Portra 800 Medium format film, during the Sunrise media period of ArtNeun 2.
I’ve been shooting with Brendan since the first edition of ArtNeun, so seeing number two come together after a year of shooting the lead up was really special.
This was one of the major arrangements of the show, in honour of the Turbo’s 50th anniversary. A circle of 3.0 and 3.3s in various complimentary colours proved a challenge to photograph, but a rewarding one.
